For many energy projects, a big challenge is to onboard personnel safely, effectively, at speed, and at scale. And several clients are using Igloo technology to overcome this challenge.

As part of their induction, team members are taken through a virtual representation of a live site, briefed on their role and responsibilities, potential hazards are highlighted, and safety drills are rehearsed. The aim is to get large teams of people job-ready, site-ready, and safety-aware.

On an energy project in Canada, one client reported:

Virtual site visits

Increasingly, energy clients are using Igloo to avoid travel to faraway locations. Rather than sending an entire operations and maintenance team to a remote asset, one or two key personnel can visit, armed with a 360-degree camera. Footage can be live-streamed back to the control room over the standard mobile network, or recorded and played back off line.

This can then be interrogated by the wider team, who can plan a maintenance programme. Also, the size of maintenance crews can be reduced, with connected worker technologies used to loop-in offsite personnel when their expertise is required.

On an energy project in the UK, one client reported:

Collaborative design reviews

Many of our clients use their Igloo systems for design reviews and planning meetings. The vast 360-degree screens can be used to visualise sub-surface data and/or display 3D design and engineering models and/or related digital twin data and/or any other digital tools and applications.

Rather than having to switch between multiple screens and desktops, everything can be viewed, side-by-side. Data siloes can be overcome. Team members can access, interrogate and update all the data relating to their project. And the room itself becomes a macro-tool.

We have developed plugins and viewers, including:

GLTF, OBJ and FBX file types, Navisworks Manage, Revit Snapshot Viewers, Cesium, Esri ArcGis, Unity and Unreal. If ever a client uses a tool that isn’t supported, we work with the client to find a solution and, in many cases, work with the vendor to develop a deep integration.
